Mum Over Forty

Over 40, Over Stimulated, and Overjoyed With My Houseplants

Hi, I’m Jessica!

Welcome to my little corner of the internet, where life is beautifully busy and slightly chaotic (in the best way). I’m a mum over 40 raising a lively and endlessly curious 6-year-old, married to a wonderful French man, living family in France. I juggle my days working full-time as a secretary while also volunteering as a first responder – because apparently I don’t believe in free time, or sitting still for too long.

Living a full life!

My world is a constant balancing act between schedules, school runs, paperwork, family life, and the occasional adrenaline-filled call to help someone in need. Being a volunteer first responder has taught me a lot about resilience, community, and the importance of staying calm when life gets unpredictable – skills that, coincidentally, also come in handy when parenting a strong-willed 6-year-old.

When I’m not working, responding to emergencies, negotiating with a small human about screen time or working on some sort of “project” you will usually find me outside in my garden. Gardening is my therapy, my quiet space, and sometimes my audience. Indoor or outdoor my plants are excellent listeners and far less argumentative. I love nurturing things, whether that’s watching seedlings grow, creating a cozy home for my family, or helping people during difficult moments.

To blog or not to blog?

“To blog or not to blog” — that was the question that lingered in my mind for quite some time. Between work, volunteering, motherhood, and everyday life, starting a blog felt a little like adding one more spinning plate to an already impressive circus act. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that blogging isn’t about having extra time or a perfectly organized life — it’s about sharing stories, experiences, lessons, and little moments that might resonate with someone else. Life moves fast, children grow quickly, gardens bloom and fade with the seasons, and memories can easily slip by unnoticed. This blog is my way of slowing down, reflecting, laughing at the chaos, and capturing pieces of a life that is wonderfully imperfect and constantly evolving.

Travel is another passion of mine and something our family loves to do together. Exploring new places, cultures, and foods reminds me how big and exciting the world is, and how important it is to slow down and enjoy experiences, even when life feels busy. Being an english women in france also brings its own funny, touching, and sometimes confusing moments but the culture, the food and the people are certainly make it worth it.

This blog is my space to share honest experiences, small victories, funny parenting moments, lessons learned (sometimes the hard way), and reflections on motherhood later in life. I talk about balancing work, volunteering, and family, navigating life in France,  and embracing the beautiful, unpredictable mess that real life often is.

If you’re looking for perfection, you probably won’t find it here. But if you enjoy real life, humour, growth, and finding joy in the small everyday moments, you’re in the right place.
